Garage Center of Contemporary Culture, Moscow

    Share

It is known that the traditional museums are getting replaced with cultural centers, which are not only make exhibitions, but become "places of strength". In the West, this phenomenon is already familiar, but there're few places like that in Moscow. And one of them - Center of Contemporary Culture "Garage".

In the Soviet and new Russian contemporary art tradition it's artistic squats that used to be "places of power" and they were created by the artists themselves. They took an apartment together, lived and worked there and were fueling each other with creative energy. Actually several quite respectable places in Moscow used to start as a territory "for close circle". In turn, a kind of modern culture sign is an artificial creation of "power centers" and, consequently, an attempt to give an artistic impulse to very large circle a mass audience.

"Garage" is not the first Moscow artificially created "power center", but clearly the biggest. Before it was closed for reconstruction in the autumn of 2009, it gave the exhibitions, organized educational programs, parties and art campaigns. The "Garage" cafe bears no resemblance to the classical museum buffets. It's a cozy restaurant that is designed as a cafe from the "Friends" show. Fine dressed up waiters, designer furniture, author's menu. CCC "Garage" prepares their future visitors from early childhood on the weekends working group. You can bring there children from two years. And artists and art historians will work with them. And this is not an art school, it's a kind of creative workshop for children.

In addition "Garage" is very proud of the building that it occupies. This is a monument of Soviet Constructivism of 20th years, the building of Bahmetyev bus depot. The construction takes area of 8500 square meters, it was designed by architect Konstantin Melnikov and constructed by the engineer Vladimir Shukhov. To the end of the 20th century the former greatness of building has disappeared, it was threatened with destruction. But then Dasha Zhukova's Iris Foundation has fell in interest with the building and it has been saved. Now there is the Moscow Center of Contemporary Culture "Garage" - the largest center of modern culture in Europe
